John berger ways of seeing why we need

He suggests that publicity is everywhere in our society. He starts and ends his article on the how and they why. In my mind, John Berger focused on two main topics: How and why publicity is so involved in today’s society and the relationship between publicity and oil paintings. He makes the connection to publicity because publicity, like oil paintings, made people jealous of things they didn’t have, and made people look to the future. One, they had the wealth to do so, and two, to show their future descendants what they were like. He gives a history lesson on the oil paintings and tells us that the reason people had oil paintings showing themselves was for a couple different reasons. He goes on and talk about some other common points between the two. (due to the reproduction errors, I can only assume they are images and paintings based on the preceding text) Berger points out how similar these images are. He continues to say that the similarities are more than just that, and he shows us 2 whole pages of publicity images and oil paintings. He says that publicity pictures refer back to old oil paintings and sculptures for approval and authority. He asks the question, “Does the language of publicity have anything in common with that of oil painting” (Berger 134)? He answers his question with a yes. John Berger continues to write about publicity and how is relates to oil paintings. Publicity is everywhere, persuading viewers that they need to buy whatever it is that is being sold. One of the biggest factors adding to greed and desire is publicity. The only thing that drives capitalism is greed and desire. I have to full-heatedly agree with Berger here. When summarizing his article, Berger says the “without publicity capitalism could not survive” (Berger 154). Publicity is meant to cause envy and jealousy. The future “you” if you had a certain product. Berger says that publicity is meant to look at the future. He says that we see so many publicity ads that we have used to seeing them that we barely see how they effect us, but there is a major effect. (Possibly Times Square or Las Vegas) Pretty much the only thing that can be clearly seen in the photograph are the massive ads the line the buildings, specifically Coca-Cola’s advertisement. In the article, Berger posts a picture of a large city’s downtown area. This is so true! Just about every magazine, web page, and video has some sort of advertisement that goes along with it! Publicity is around every corner. Or we see it on a television screen whilst waiting for the commercial break to end” (Berger 130). We can’t get away from it! He says, “We see it as we turn a page, as we turn a corner, as a vehicle passes us. Second, he makes a connection between oil paintings and publicity.īerger starts off his article by talking about how publicity is everywhere we go. First he talks about the purpose of publicity, how it works, and why it is relevant and important. In his article, Berger makes a few key points.

In John Berger’s Ways of Seeing article, he goes on and on about publicity and relates it to many things in this world Throughout his article he uses picture of magazines, cities, paintings, and many other photographs to help illustrate his point, unfortunately due to the reproduction of the article, the pictures weren’t clear and didn’t really benefit Berger to the full extent it could have.
